Why PS4 showing not enough free system memory?
When your PS4 console displays the error reading, ‘ps4 there is not enough free space in system storage’, it may be due to many reasons.
One of the most common reasons is that your device is short on storage. This happens over time when the amount of games you have downloaded has exceeded the limited space on the console’s memory and storage.
Another thing to consider is that other system files and system updates are usually downloaded along with it when you install a game. Additional files such as stored cache, accumulating cookies, and browsing history build up on the storage over time and lead to the error occurring.
How to fix not enough free space on PS4
The only way to make the PS4 not enough free system memory fix is to clear up unnecessary files and clear up space.
This can be done by selecting a simple theme, deleting your browser history, deleting old games that you no longer play, and rebuilding your PS4 database.
Here are the methods to fix not enough free space on ps4:
Fix 1: Choose a simple theme
Since this hack is the easiest one to try out compared to other complicated ones, it is worth giving a try.
PS4 gamers who have experienced this error have made the suggestion of switching the theme to pick something simple. This will double for both clearing up space and saving battery life. While customized themes may seem interesting and have additional features, they come with the disadvantage of taking up more storage.
Fix 2: Clear history of your browser
Accumulating browser history can build up on the system storage leading to a lack of available storage. This is why you may see ‘PS4 not enough free space in system storage’ displayed on your screens. If you delete your browser’s previous history, you will be able to clear up some space. This may help to solve the issue.
Fix 3: Delete old games
If you have a huge collection of PlayStation games installed, there are likely games that you frequently play and games that you no longer play. Sort them out! Then delete the games you no longer play. This may seem hard as you have an emotional attachment to those games.
Deleting them will clear up space that will help solve memory and storage issues and speed up your console.
So it’s a win-win situation
Fix 4: Rebuild database
If your PS4 console is malfunctioning or has some corrupted files, it can have trouble registering system storage, and this error may pop up.
To resolve this, you need to rebuild the PS4 database. Here’s how to do it.
- Please turn off your PS4 console and then link your Dual Shock 4 controller with it using a USB cable.
- Press down on the power button and release it when you hear two beeps.
- Now turn on your PS4 console in safe mode by pressing on PS button on the controller.
- There will be an option reading ‘Rebuild database’. Click on it.
- Wait for the process to complete and then check if the changes have been made.
If the error is still there, then you should resort to another solution.
Can you increase memory and storage?
You may be wondering if one can top up by increasing memory and storage on PS4. The answer to that is YES! By connecting an external hard drive by plugging it in via a USB cable, you can top up your memory and be able to keep your old games along with being able to install new ones.
Big hard drives and SSD cards are now available easily and are not heavy on the pocket either, as the cost is pretty reasonable. It’s a good investment to make.

I have a 1T HD installed IN my ps4 and a 1T HD external drive and my ps4 is giving “not enough storage” errors on both of them. I had plenty of room on BOTH HD’s but I was still getting the error. I have tried every single step on here and nothing works. Any other suggestions?
I understand that the PS4 has a maximum external storage size of 8TB.
I bought a Seagate 4TB external HDD specially designed for use with the PS4. This was back in late October 2018 when SSDs maxed out at around 1TB, possibly 2TB. Then, the loading times of SSDs, although significantly faster, wasn’t all that much faster and only really made a difference with loading screens. As the loading time is used by me to rest my hands, my priority remained with the increased storage. The device I bought is the Seagate STGD4000400 4TB USB 3.0 portable 2.5 inch External HDD. It rests on top of my PS4 so I have it firmly stuck down with ‘Blu-Tak’ to stop it falling off at any time and getting damaged (not a problem if it were a SSD). It uses the front right hand USB port on my PS4. The left port is taken up by my PSVR.
